What I’m leaving behind

What I’m leaving behind

It is the middle of the year, which is the most honest place to take stock. The beginning of the year is full of declarations. The end of the year is full of summaries. The middle of the year is full of the actual evidence.

Three things I have stopped doing#

  • Checking email before breakfast.
  • Saying yes to the second coffee of the afternoon.
  • Pretending that I’ll get to it this weekend is a plan.

Three things I have stopped pretending#

  • That I am going to read every book I buy.
  • That my best work happens after ten p.m.
  • That a long todo list and a productive day are the same thing.

None of this is dramatic. All of it is real. Quiet abandonments are how lives actually change.
